-{Aleks.Wynn}-When you lower me down Beneath that sky of gray - - - 'And here we are. Again. Why do these things always happen to me!' Aleks thought as she looked down at her arm. Really there wasn't anything wrong with it... if you were a giant bird. Sprouting from her shoulder was a giant brown wing. It was actually quite pretty, dark brown on one side and a creamy white flecked with brown on the inside; it was a falcon wing.
“So close,” she muttered to herself. And she had been close, this was the first time she had attempted to turn into a bird, and she had gotten part of it right. Maybe another month and I'll be an animagus. Of course, no one could know. There really was no reason not to become a registered animagus, except for the fact that she was underage. Mostly she was doing it for the thrill of breaking the rules and having a secret. And to fly. Flying on a broomstick is all fine and dandy, but to be able to fly on her own would be amazing.
The great doors of the hospital wing opened with a creak, turning her head Aleks saw that Madam Pomfrey had returned with a huge jar of greenish gunk, a bottle of deep purple potion, a small cup, and a huge brush you might see at a muggle barbeque. “Here you are dear. You are going to have to drink this,” she said as she put the bottle and cup down on the night table, “and we are going to have to cover your... wing with with this salve.” In the next few minutes, Aleks learned two things. One, just because some thing looks pretty, does not mean it tastes pretty, and two, if it looks gross, it probably smells even nastier. When the jar of salve was opened, it smelled like Hagrid on a hot day after he had been working with flobber worms. Once the cool green goop had sufficiently coated her arm, Madam Pomfrey left, telling her they would wash it off in the morning, and by that time the wing should be gone.
“This is going to be a long night,” Aleks said to herself as the door closed behind Madam Pomfrey. Her wing was already beginning to itch, and the smell didn't seem like it would go away anytime soon. She closed her eyes, picturing herself flying as a falcon, soaring over the mountains, riding the wind currents, dipping and diving, skimming over the lake; she had almost forgotten that she was laying in the hospital wing and could only smell the fresh breeze when the doors to the hospital wing opened again, opening her eyes she turned to see what new torture potion Madam Pomfrey was bringing to use on her, except this time it wasn't Madam Pomfrey.

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. "And Professor Trelawney didn't even realize what had happened, that crackpot. Thought she was seeing some kind of future or something." Dante chuckled as his friend finished his story, wondering how they'd ended up with a professor for divination that didn't really understand the art. Or science. Dante wasn't really sure where divination fit. "Dante!" Dante stopped as he heard someone yelling his name from behind him. He turned to see one of the beaters from the Quidditch team running after him, his face flushed. "What?" Dante asked, worried by the look on his teammate's face. "Aleks is in the hospital wing, I'm not really sure why." Dante took a moment to process that before turning to his friends. "I need to go check on her, you guys go ahead and eat." Dante turned down the multiple offers to go with him, or at least wait until he was finished. He didn't want them to suffer for his team, and it really didn't have much to do with them. He looked at the beater. "Thanks." Then he took off toward the hospital wing, despite the rumbles in his stomach. He ignored the catcalls that his friends made as he walked away, but he still felt his ears grow warm. He didn't think of Aleks like that in any way, shape, or form. She was a girl on his team, and he had known her for a long time; she was like his sister. He had to think like that, or else he would find he couldn't talk to her, either, and then the team would have issues. "A company, Always on the run. A destiny, Towards the rising sun. I was born, a shot gun in my hand..." Dante sang quietly to himself as he walked down the empty hallway. Dante hoped it wasn't something serious; they had a match against Ravenclaw coming up, and he didn't want to lose. Aleks begin gone would definitely be an issue. He shook his head. "Rebel souls, deserters we've been called. Chose a gun and threw away the sun..." Dante wondered why he'd chosen this song; it was good, he just hadn't listened to it in a long time. And it didn't quite match his current mood. "Now these towns, they all know our name." Dante opened the doors to the hospital wing, sticking his head in. It seemed pretty empty tonight; so Aleks was the only one who had decided it was a good night to be injured. He sighed and walked toward where Aleks was laying. His hands were shoved deep in his pockets as he asked, "And what exactly did you do? He grinned as he eyed the wing that seemed to be attached to her, wondering what could possibly have gone wrong to turn her partly into a big bird. That, and wondering if she'd be fit to fly for the game... which now seemed a whole lot funnier, what with the wing. Dante chuckles quietly without meaning to. It wasn't funny, this was serious. But she had a wing. [/blockquote] [[ ]] .::Word Count::.510 .::Credited::. Monster by Skillet Also Bad Company;;Five Finger Death Punch .::Notes::. -{Aleks.Wynn}-When you lower me down Beneath that sky of gray - - - 'Of course it has to be Dante. She thought, 'I hope he thinks this is funny, or else this isn't going to go well.' Dante was probably the only person, other than a professor, who would really lay into her. A piece of his mind was definitely not something she wanted at this particular moment in her life. As he entered the wing, he gave a sigh of what Aleks imagined was exasperation, which was not entirely encouraging.
He sauntered over to her bed with his hands in his pockets, pausing when he was her wing. “And what exactly did you do?” he asked with a grin. 'Grins are a good,' she thought. The real answer to his question was not really one she wanted to give though. Luckily up to this point no one had asked. She had hidden her wing on the way to the hospital wing, and Madam Pomfrey had been too concerned with getting her better to ask her what she had done. Aleks had known someone would ask eventually, but she had been hoping it wouldn't be Dante. Actually she had been hoping he wouldn't find out at all. Dante was one the only people she had a problem lying to. Maybe it was because they had known each other so long, or maybe because he was so cute.
His being cute was a fact, not a personal opinion. She wasn't attracted to him, that would feel wrong since he was like her brother, but it was something other girls pointed out to her constantly. He was one of those tall dark and handsome types. Well, he really wasn't all that tall, and he had blonde hair, but it was close enough. Whenever girls started talking about him, Aleks always encouraged them to go talk to him. She knew he hated it, but her favorite color was the red his face turned when girls try to flirt with him.
If asked, she might admit to having been attracted to him when they first met, but sometime in the past few years that attraction had diminished. Now, one of the highlights of her day was making fun of his bashfulness around girls. “Hey gorgeous, it's nice to see you too,” she said with her most winning smile. “And I don't know what you could possibly be referring to.” Her mind searched for a reasonable excuse for the wing. There was absolutely no reasonable explanation for there to be a wing where her arm should be.
“Oh, you mean why am I in the Hospital wing? I just have a cold,” she paused to fake a pitiful cough, “I think Madam Pomfrey may have overreacted a bit, but I should be out in the morning.” She tried to keep a straight face, but as soon as she looked at Dante she broke out laughing. Once she started laughing she couldn't stop. Really it wasn't that funny, but the situation was just so ridiculous. Soon she had tears streaming down her face and her laugh had turned from the controlled laugh she normally used in public to a strange high pitched squeaking sound.

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Dante felt his face flush when Aleks greeted him. She knew it would happen, and despite his best efforts, he could never seem to stop it. Every time his face would turn bright red and he would feel like a complete idiot. Usually he would chew her out; she would do that when there was a crowd around, and Dante was fairly certain is was just because she enjoyed torturing him. But right now he was a little more concerned with her health; she didn't seem too worried about it, but he still wanted to make sure their match wasn't in jeopardy. He was pretty serious when it came to Quidditch, because it was one of the things that he could do well and really enjoyed doing. Flying was something else, and he often wished he'd been able to fly before he'd come to school. There were very few things that could keep him from a match; either he was physically unable to fly, or... well, he was 'wolfing out,' as Night called it.
When Aleks faked a cough, Dante's eyebrows rose a considerable amount in incredulity. She was going to try to push a cold when she had a wing? She could do better than that. Granted, she was probably just trying to be snarky and get him riled up before he really got into questioning her. She couldn't hold a straight face for more than a minute before she was laughing, and that laughter turned into a squeak that Dante likened to a zebra. He shook his head even as he chuckled; he couldn't really stay upset with her for very long.
"You know, as cute as it is that you won't give me a straight answer, will you please be honest with me? We have a match in a few days, and you're in the hospital wing with...well, a wing." Dante hadn't realized how awkward that sentence was until he was too far in to correct it. With anyone except Aleks, he would have been beet red. As it was, he just shook his head. "That doesn't exactly lend well to winning out match. I'm straight with you, I think you owe me." But that wasn't quite true; he had yet to tell her about his werewolf side. Dante was sure that some people had figured it out; that sometimes after the full moon he was 'sick' and went to stay with his cousin the auror. That sometimes Night came around to check up on him. That he generally had a clear schedule the day before the full moon, and he didn't like to make plans for that day. Anyone who was paying attention could figure it out. But most people either didn't pay enough attention or didn't try to, so he could get away with it. On the other hand, he had an auror and the headmistress helping him to keep it quiet. They had been careful to make sure that it wasn't a well known thing, because they didn't want people to freak out or avoid him. And if they were being honest with themselves, Dante had enough trouble with people, they didn't need to add fear that he would bit them to the list. Not only would he blush when he tried to speak with girls, but they would also be nervous that he was going to sprout fangs and a tail. So he wasn't necessarily completely honest with her, but on all other counts he tried to be. [/blockquote] [[ ]] .::Word Count::.585 .::Credited::. -{Aleks.Wynn}-When you lower me down Beneath that sky of gray - - - True to form, Dante's face turned a shade of red rarely seen in nature. If there was one thing Aleks prided herself on being able to do, besides embarrassing Dante, was making him not be mad with her, and judging by his smile, she still had it. Unfortunately, she had not distracted him for long because the next thing he said was, “You know, as cute as it is that you won't give me a straight answer, will you please be honest with me? We have a match in a few days, and you're in the hospital wing with...well, a wing.”
“Aw, you think I'm cute?” she said with mock excitement. “I've been waiting for you to tell me that forever! Now we can get married and have-.” she trailed off because she was afraid if she kept going, Dante would have an aneurysm in his face. And because she wasn't sure where she was going with that sentence. Despite her joking, she knew Dante was worried about her wing and how if would effect their match so she added, “Madam Pomfrey said I would be out in the morning, good as new.” She looked down at her wing and idly fiddled with a feather, “Although, if I could grow another wing in addition to this one, it might improve my game...” Not that she actually thought that, it would be nearly impossible to catch the quaffle, but it was a thought.
She did owe him though. She not only worried him about the match and about her health, she also couldn't think of a time he had ever lied to her. Sometimes she got the feeling he wasn't telling her something, but it was his business and he didn't have to tell her. At the same time, this was a personal thing, and he didn't necessarily need to know. There was no way to not lie to him. She could tell him she was trying a spell or potion and it had gone wrong, but then he would want to know what spell or potion it had been. She could tell him someone had hexed her and she didn't know who it had been, but then he would get all protective and drive her insane. Or she could tell him it was none of his business and to butt out. That wouldn't end well. She lost no matter what she did, but at least with the truth she wouldn't feel guilty afterward.
She looked up at him, only to see that he was still looking at her intently. She instantly looked back at her wing. It was so soft. She couldn't wait until she could turn her whole body into a bird. 'Should I tell him? Would he yell at me for being so stupid and risking my life? What would he think?' All these thoughts spun through her head as she stroked her wing, purposefully not meeting Dante's eyes. She knew if she told him he would keep her secret, but something was holding her back. It had been a long time since she had felt like she could tell someone something so close to her. She had always had trust issues, and they had only gotten worse in the past year.
She finally met his eyes again, then sighed and said “You really want to know what I did? If I tell you, you have to promise not to laugh. And you're not allowed to tell anyone.” 'If I have to tell him, I better at least make sure no one else can hear.' she thought as she reached for her wand on the night stand to cast the Muffliato spell. This would have gone differently, had she not been reaching with her right arm, which was actually her wing. She ended up making an awkward flapping motion instead. Unfortunately, Dante was in the way of her flapping.

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Dante should have realized that his words would come back to bite him, and the blush that flooded his face wasn't altogether unexpected, albeit uncontrollable. He glanced away; it was moments like these that he was painfully aware that she was a girl, and she was attractive, too; most of the time Dante saw Aleks through the sister lens, or the teammate lens, but when she made comments like she was making... well, he felt his bashfulness come full force and it was only force of will that he was able to control it. Well, control it in a way that wasn't stumbling around words and running away.
"Aleks..."
he muttered, attempting to return his attention to her despite the heat in his face. Then she mentioned the wing, and his flush was forgotten. "Aleks, I'd much rather you keep your arms so you can play the game. Call it personal preference, but I think you'd be better on a broomstick with both arms available to, you know, catch the quaffle." Dante noticed an unusual change in behavior from the girl he'd known for so long; suddenly she wouldn't meet his eyes for very long, reminding Dante verily of his own habit to avoid eye contact when he was around women. Aleks was usually too bold and stubborn to let someone else have that kind of power over her, but now Dante felt as if she was... well, almost afraid of him. And that was so unlike her that he found himself a lot more nervous than when he had been summoned to the hospital wing. Was there something else wrong that she wasn't telling him? Was she afraid to tell him the truth? If someone had hurt her, he wouldn't hesitate to hunt them down and demand an explanation. He knew the trouble he would get in, but he wouldn't bother to bring his wand, so it wouldn't be anything too serious. He'd just knock whoever it was around for a bit and then let someone drag him off to the headmistresses office to explain himself. It took an effort to keep from demanding that Aleks tell him the truth about what happened. He realized that he was a little scared that there was something wrong, and that fear was nicely covered by anger. He wasn't one to have a temper, but if someone had hurt her... he didn't know if he could be held accountable for his actions then. Dante settled down considerably when she asked him if he wanted to know what had happened. He didn't know what kind of a question that was; why wouldn't he want to know? That was what he'd been asking for. His anger rested in the back of his mind still, but he was able to push what was left of it away. No point in getting riled up before he even knew what had happened. "Of course I want to know." He answered, his voice quiet. "And if you don't want me to tell anyone, I won't. I will not promise I won't laugh, though; that depends on how dumb you've been." He chuckled quietly to assure her that he wasn't mad at her, and in an attempt to make her feel more comfortable; she seemed a little on edge, almost, and she wasn't make jokes. Dante was certain there was something serious going on here that he wasn't aware of, and he could only hope that Aleks would deem it necessary to explain it to him. He wanted to help her, and he could only do that if she would let him. All of a sudden a wing whacked him in the chest, pushing him backward a few steps. He stared at her for a moment before he realized she hadn't meant to do that, but he couldn't let her off easily. "Was there a reason you decided to attack me?" He asked, keeping the sarcasm out of the words and the laugh contained inside him. He forced his voice to sound serious and a little forceful, because it was so much more fun when she thought he was being a jerk. Besides, she was a jerk often enough, he was allowed sometimes as well. [/blockquote][/blockquote] [[ ]] .::Word Count::.706 .::Credited::. Monster by Skillet .::Notes::.
