DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Dante smirked. It certainly was a coincidence that this girl happened to be studying for the same thing he was. He wondered if she felt as deep a hatred for it as he did. Probably not. He generally felt like no one else quite understood how hard it was for him to remember the day that this wizard created that potion that revolutionized the way wizards did such and such a thing. He was fairly certain it was just a matter of a few hours of studying for other people.
"I'm a sixth year." he answered, staring at the book in front of him. He glanced up when she offered to help him. He wasn't sure that would work; he'd tried going through dates and stuff with people before, and it always ended up that they started talking about something else. Dante's mind automatically fled to happier topics when faced with History of Magic. Then he didn't get as much studying in because he'd been talking instead of looking at his book and his notes, and then he ended up doing worse on the test in the end. But on the other hand, Lavigna didn't seem like the kind of girl that would let him get off topic; she'd already threatened to curse him if he didn't look at her, and he assumed she would do something similar if he got off topic. So maybe, in the end, it would be very beneficial to study with this girl than on his own. He wouldn't know until he tried it, he supposed, and he was determined to at least make friends with this girl, if nothing else worked right. Then he could say that he had had a conversation with a girl that lasted long enough to evolve into friendship. And he wouldn't feel like as much of a loser when he hung out with his friends or with Night. Then when they started talking about girls, he could inform them that he had made progress and had a friend that was a girl. They would still make fun of him, but it would be something. "Sounds like fun." Dante felt his blush disappearing, but he still felt nervous, and generally embarrassed when something like, 'sounds like fun' came out of his mouth. Of course it wasn't fun. No one liked to write that much for a class, not over something like this. But it was too late to take it back now. He wondered how many times his mouth would get him in trouble by spouting random nonsense. He could take notes, he supposed. He'd heard somewhere once that writing things down helped commit it to memory; he'd never really thought about applying that bit of information to studying before, he supposed. It seemed like a lot of extra work, but he supposed if that was what it took, he would do it. He thought about thanking her again, but he remembered that she hadn't really accept his apology the last time, and it was probably useless. So instead he said, " "I'm glad you're here." And then he blushed all over again, because he was being ridiculous.[/blockquote] [[ ]] .::Word Count::.527 .::Credited::. “Sixth year? Oh, good. I’m in seventh.” Lavigna said, satisfied with the knowledge that she’d already learned the material Dante still had to memorise. She would have also taken the exams already and might have seen the assignment or at least a similar one. That way, Lavigna could concentrate on Dante actually learning something.
“Ok. Let’s make our notes. How long do you think it will take you to do that? Would an hour be alright, or less?” Lavigna had her work for the week all planned out. All except for Herbology and so she knew she could split her own History work load into two sessions if she needed to.
Lavigna looked back at Dante and good, he was blushing less and less. Really, he seemed like a puppy that was shy at first but with time got used to her presence. She should have probably just held out her hand for him to sniff at in the first place and plied him with treats. Inwardly, Lavigna found that thought quite adorable. Then she wondered what the hell she was thinking and reprimanded herself for entertaining such weird thoughts.
“Not fun, necessarily,” Lavigna said, her smirk indicating that she was genuinely having fun, “but it will certainly be educational. For you.”
With that Lavigna settled down and opened the book at the page they’d been told in class. She started reading and once she’d come upon the first useful piece of information, dipped her quill into her ink pot and made her first bullet point, the quill scratching across the parchment quietly in Lavigna’s crisp and clean handwriting.
Lavigna only paused and glanced at Dante when the boy spoke again. She winked.
“I’ll remind you of that when we’re done studying.”

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Would an hour be enough?
Dante wondered if this was the point where he admitted that he'd never thought taking notes out of a book could make for good studying, and he'd never actually done it before. But he didn't want to seem dumb in front of this girl, so he just nodded his head and began pulling parchment, a quill, and ink out of his bag, which sat on the floor beside him.
Dante stopped what he was doing and glanced over at Lavigna, who winked as she said, “I’ll remind you of that when we’re done studying.” He quickly looked back at what he was doing and hoped he wasn't turning red again, although his ears and the back of his neck felt very warm. He laid the parchment out in front of him and uncapped the ink, carefully dipping his quill into the liquid and going back to his book. Taking notes... He figured he would just take what seemed important out, right? He read a few lines and decided that would probably be all of it. It all seemed important, and he wasn't sure how to differentiate between the things that were actually necessary and the things that were just filler, to make it seem longer. Dante started scratching words onto the parchment, deciding that even if he wasn't good at picking out the key points, at least writing it down would help him remember it. Even if he remembered the whole book, or the unimportant things, at least that would be something. A small bullet point and a sentence. A sub-point and another sentence. His quill traveled along the parchment and back over, following the same pattern over and over with different words. Dante glanced over at Lavigna, watching her scrawl words on her parchment and glance back at the book, read a few lines and write a few down. She seemed to know what she was doing. Dante looked at the fall of her hair as she did her work, at the shadow of her lashes down her cheeks, the set of her mouth as she concentrated. She was pretty. He shook his head quickly and focused on his own parchment, remembering that he needed to get something done and not stare at the woman - girl - student beside him. The whole purpose of this was studying for his class. But he found a desire to speak to her, even if he knew he would say something dumb, even if he knew he would get red in the face and had the potential to make a complete fool of himself. He just wanted to be successful once, with a girl, and she seemed really cool... He glanced up again and tried to think of something to say. He shouldn't tell her that he thought she was pretty, because he got embarrassed just thinking about it. He shouldn't tell her that he wanted to talk to her, because that sounded like the beginning of some big dramatic conversation. He shouldn't tell her thank you, because again, she didn't really seem to care for that very much. He looked up at the other people in the library. He looked at the people around him that were talking quietly, at the people who sat on their own studying, the people that were trying hard to keep their laughter under control as they looked through a magazine of some kind. They all seemed perfectly content and normal. He should be able to do the same. He steeled himself and decided he was going to do it, he could start a conversation- He looked at her again and sighed inwardly. No he wasn't. He couldn't. Because every time he looked at her, he realized that, despite his best efforts, he was terrified. He could answer questions, he could utter short little dumb phrases, but he couldn't find it in him to start a real conversation. He kept second guessing himself, kept shying away or making excuses. So he turned his attention back to his parchment and began scratching away again. As Dante was writing, a song started circling his head. He tried to ignore it, and for the most part he did. "Give me a second I, I need to get my story straight. My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the empire state." He sang under his breath. He didn't realize he was singing it aloud until he reached the chorus, and he cut off abruptly and hoped no one had heard him. If that wasn't embarrassing in a quiet library, nothing was. lavigna . eliora . lestrange ;;get what i want 'cause i ask for it not because i'm really that deserving of it;;
For a while Lavigna studied silently. She was making progress and not paying any attention to much that was going on around her. Eventually, though, she became aware that Dante kept looking at her once in a while. Lavigna tried to ignore it. She as not going to let him break her concentration. He should be making notes, too. Lavigna’s eyes slid sideways, just for a short glance at what Dante was doing and then returned to her own work.
Soon, though, it was becoming harder and harder for Lavigna not to feel watched, not to know that he kept looking at her. It was quite annoying, actually and caused Lavigna to pause in her writing once in a while to steal annoyed glances at Dante from behind her hair. Couldn’t he just… not do that? It was distracting, as much as Lavigna didn’t want to admit to it.
And then, finally, Dante seemed to go back to writing notes and Lavigna felt relieved. She didn’t know why she’d even noticed in the first place. She supposed she’d just sensed his eyes on her.
It was quiet at first and Lavigna thought she might have been imagining it; imagining the singing. But then she realised it was quite opposite her and it was coming from Dante. Lavigna blinked and set her quill down before raising her head and looking at the boy opposite her. He stopped abruptly.
“Dante, you were singing,” Lavigna informed him in a voice that more implied ‘what the hell are you doing?’
“Why were you singing?”

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Dante didn't look up at her when she asked him why he was singing. What was he supposed to do? Tell her he hadn't realized he was singing? Tell her that he just burst out into song sometimes?
"I guess... I just like to. Sometimes." He was afraid to look up at her. Of course, here was that conversation he'd been craving. Here was the interaction he'd been hoping to start without actually doing anything. But now he was kind of wishing he hadn't gotten it, because now she was demanding to know what he was doing, why he was singing under his breath. Dante tried to focus on his note-taking, staring at the paper and the book but avoiding Lavigna's gaze and definitely making sure his mouth stayed closed. He was sure that she wasn't going to just drop it at 'he likes to,' but he was still hoping that she would ignore the little mishap. He didn't mind singing in front of his friends. He thought he was pretty good, and they all teased him about it but they would turn it around by telling him he should stop muttering songs around them and sing for real people. He laughed and pushed them off, and went back to his muttering. Well, now he'd sung for a real person, and he really wished he hadn't. "Listen." he said after a little bit. "Just forget it. It won't happen again." Because he was way too embarrassed to do it again. He would have thought his mouth would have been glued shut when he was already so nervous, but apparently the one habit wouldn't go away regardless of his situation. “Well, I wasn’t saying it was bad,” Lavigna replied quietly. “It’s just, we’re in the library.”
Lavigna sighed, looked up and towards the window and a thought dawned on her. Maybe the fact of where they were, in the library, was exactly the problem. Or a definite contributing factor, probably. Well, it was worth a try. Honestly, this place was becoming confining and Lavigna could feel herself getting frustrated with the situation.
“Dante,” she began, “would it help if we were not in the library? Would you like to study somewhere else?”
Since it was late in the year, outside it would be cold, but if they wore coats they would be fine in one of the designated seating areas that were strewn around the grounds. But even if not there, Hogwarts had so many other places and quiet corners. The place was rather large, after all.
It was starting to grate on Lavigna’s nerves having to keep her voice down. She was beginning to have the feeling that Dante might clam up less if there were fewer people around to witness his bumbling or blushing or singing or… Oh, dear. Why was she doing this again? Lavigna still didn’t quite know. But she was doing this; she was determined to.
“We could go outside, or anywhere else around the castle.”
Really, anywhere. Lavigna was beginning to think that the library was best for studying alone. [/blockquote] ;;; word count;; 236 credit;; Primadonna Girl by Marina and the Diamonds notes;; Thought a change of scenery might help things flow thoughts;; And so did Lavigna. XD

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. The lyrics of the song still circled Dante's mind, begging to be sung, but he knew better than to let his mouth open again. This was a library; it was quiet, it was for studying, and it wasn't for studying.
Dante nodded when Lavigna suggested leaving. "That would probably be a good idea." He felt a little better about his voice, after she'd explained she didn't think it was bad; it was an ego booster, even if it wasn't necessarily a compliment. He scrawled a few more words on his parchment before capping his ink and beginning to put his things away. Yes, there were more distractions outside of the library, but there was also the freedom to be a little louder. Not that he was necessarily going to be loud; he was still nervous about talking to her. And he was still distracted in the library, just in a different way. Dante slung his bag over his shoulder, holding the parchment with damp ink in one hand. He carefully pushed the chair in, moving more carefully than usual with memories of the other chair still fresh in his mind. He ran a hand through his hair nervously. Other places also didn't give him an excuse to be quiet. "Where to?" He asked. He was fairly certain that they weren't allowed to go to common rooms, since they were from different houses, supposedly opposing houses on top of that. He wondered what his peers would think of his hanging out with a Slytherin girl; he hadn't thought about it before, but some of his classmates took the idea of house pride a little bit farther than cheering on their team at Quidditch matches. To some of them Slytherins were evil incarnate, it seemed. He'd heard Slytherins express their pride for the house in less than pleasant words and chants about Gryffindor. Dante had never been one to care about what other people thought, because he knew he made a fool of himself more times than he could count. But he hoped this wouldn't hurt Lavigna in the long run, and he hoped they wouldn't be ostracized because they didn't pay much attention to the house rivalry. Maybe it would be better to go somewhere a little more out of the way, just so they didn't have to deal with idiots. It was dumb that he even had to think about that, but he knew the library was a rather kind place as compared to the rest of the grounds. Once they got out of here they would be faced with the realities of teenage life. He knew that not everyone was that ridiculous, but he also knew that it was when it was most inopportune that gawkers and the like showed up. "There's um... this empty classroom that I ran across on second floor... would that work?" There they wouldn't have to worry about distractions or idiots, and if the time called for it they could raise their voices a little. (In my best TV announcer impression)House conflict; how bad is it really? Stay tuned.

Lavigna nodded when Dante agreed that they should move somewhere else, recapped her ink and began to gather her things. Yes, maybe this would be good and maybe Dante would eventually stop acting like a deer in the headlights once they were more alone. It would probably make this experience less stressful for both of them.
At Dante’s question where to, Lavigna had to think for a moment. She was almost about to suggest outside, but inside would be more comfortable this time of year. But no sooner had she thought that Dante had already suggested an empty classroom on the second floor.
“That sounds good,” Laivigna said. She crammed as many books as she could into her bag and took the rest she was going to carry. This time Dante wouldn’t have to help her. Besides, he had his own things to carry.
Lavigna got up and pushed her chair carefully back to the table and then they were off, down to the second floor. Lavigna walked fast and purposefully, glancing at Dante once in a while. She slowed down once they reached the second floor landing. Lavigna stopped.
“Lead the way,” she said, nodding down the corridor.

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. Dante followed the girl out of the library, keeping a brisk pace to keep up with hers. He tried not to stare at her back like a child, he knew where he was going, but it was so much easier than to stare at his feet or attempt to watch something else. And this way he didn't seem quite so shy when she glanced back at him every once in a while. When they got to the second floor, Lavigna stopped, waiting for Dante to take the lead. He nodded and stepped in front of her. It wasn't far; just a few doors down, fourth on the left.
Dante opened the door and held it for her, trying not to blush. This was an outdated form of chivalry that Night adhered to, but to Dante it seemed awkward. Still, it was the polite thing to do, he supposed. He walked in after Lavigna, allowing the door to fall closed behind him.
It wasn't a very large classroom; a few desks scattered around the room that had obviously been abused by students, a worn out blackboard that was covered in chalk dust with no remaining pieces of chalk, and a few windows on the far wall. There were candles scattered throughout the room, most relatively new. Dante had come in here to study or think late at night sometimes, and it was nice to have a source of light that didn't require his wand. Most everything else had been cleared out when the room had lost its purpose, whatever that had been. Dante set his bag down on one of the desks that was pushed next to a few others, obviously from a previous group study session or something.
"What d'you think?" He asked, looking at the room. To him it was comfortable; to others it was grungy. It was small and generally unused, very well lit during the day and empty. Dante leaned against the desk behind him, somewhat awkwardly because he was nervous about tipping it over. Once he tipped one thing over, he was paranoid the rest of the day. Lavigna followed Dante down the hall to the fourth room on the left. She raised her eyebrow a little as Dante held open the door for her but then stepped inside, past him, wondering where he’d learned all those manners. Few boys these days had any manners to speak of, let alone such traditional ones.
Lavigna looked about the room. The desks were in disarray and it had obviously been recently used. Not for teaching, though, as the blackboard in front was obviously in disuse and lacking chalk. Some corners of the room were still dusty from not having been touched in a while and light came in through the windows on the wall opposite the door. She nodded.
“It’ll do,” she said, turning to Dante.
With that, Lavigna pushed some desks apart so there’d only be two left from the previous group of tables.
“How did you get along with your not taking,” she asked. “Are you ready yet, or do you still need time?”
Lavigna didn’t mind either way. She could continue her own work or take a break to help Dante. But it was high time they continued to get some work done. And now that they were away from the low bustle of the library and Lavigna was the only one there, maybe Dante would find it easier to study. Or, probably not, Lavigna thought, but one could always hope.
“I’ve got ahead,” she said, “so I can stop now to quiz you, if you want.”

DANTE[owen]QUICKPAW The secret side of me, I'll never let you see. I keep it caged but I can't control it. "I'll do." Dante watched as Lavigna moved things around, organizing the room to fit her needs like so many other people had already done in here.
Dante thought about the notes he'd taken. "I'm not really sure." He admitted, thinking about the page that he'd basically copied out of the book. He glanced at her to see if she disapproved of his noncommittal answer. He didn't want to admit that he didn't really understand how to take notes. He didn't want to show how dumb he really was. He'd come to terms with the fact that he wasn't very good at book learning, he'd accepted that he would never get the best grades in his class. He just didn't want to shout that to the entire world. "I really don't want to take you away from your own studying." Dante could try again to take notes; he knew he hadn't completely finished the part he'd been working through, anyway, and he could try to work through it, figure out how to do it better. "I'll just look through this some more..." He hesitantly sat down and pulled out his parchment, quill, ink, and the text he'd been going through. He didn't really want to do this, but if it would help him, he was willing to give it a shot... and he didn't want to let her down, either. Lavigna took a seat on one of the vacant chairs she’d just pushed up to the table where it belonged and elegantly crossed her legs. She took up her bag from the floor next to the chair and retrieved all the things she’d need.
“I’ve made good progress, actually,”
Lavigna said at Dante’s unsure reply. He was so very obviously not ready so there was probably more good than harm in him taking more time to take notes and study. “But, alright.” Lavigna agreed. “I still have some Charms work I could be doing so I’ll do that while you continue your notes. When you’re finished you can let me have a look and then we can try to work with them.”With how unsure Dante seemed about his notes, Lavigna wondered what that would end up like, but they’d cross that bridge when they came to it. Lavigna opened her Charms book at the page she needed to be studying and readied her wand. She first read the introductory paragraph before moving on to the incantation and the lines below it that indicated the movement she’d have to follow with her wand. The incantations sounded quite alien, so she muttered it under her breath several times to become familiar with it and to get to a point where she felt comfortable enough with it to try using it in conjunction with her wand.
